Summary and Reader response : draft 1
In the article “ IoT based Smart Parking Systems for Smart Cities”, hiOTron.com (n.d), it claims that it is crucial to create an automated smart parking management system. It was supported by recent research that, “30% of the traffic in urban areas is generated by drivers and motorists looking for parking spaces”. Smart Parking uses sensors instruments to identify the occupancy of the parking lots, and designed to transmit scanned data to the database in real-time. Hence drivers will be able to identify if there is an available parking slot through the app. It can be adopted in most urban parking spaces and managed by a programmable logic controller (PLC). However, it states that there will be many challenges such as high upfront costs, enforcement and inconvenience for tourists. Still, the benefits such as improved traffic and reduced management cost are worth the challenge.
Firstly, automobile was invented to increase convenience in everyday life. However, with the number of vehicles on the road is causing undesirable problems such as traffic jams. Shoup (2006) mentioned that wandering of cars in order to find parking spots is responsible for 30% of the entire traffic in a city. With this issue arising, smart parking was being introduced, parking lots have installed guidance system by notifying drivers the availability of parking spots. According to a research (Shin & Jun,2014), it shows that with the implementations of smart parking system it has improved the city traffic situation by 10%. Based on this result, the smart parking system is proved to be useful in the real-time environment as it improves the traffic congestion in the city.
