Summary and Reader response : draft 2
In the article “ IoT based Smart Parking Systems for Smart Cities”, hiOTron.com (n.d), it claims that it is crucial to create an automated smart parking management system. It was supported by recent research that, “30% of the traffic in urban areas is generated by drivers and motorists looking for parking spaces”. Smart Parking uses sensors instruments to identify the occupancy of the parking lots, and designed to transmit scanned data to the database in real-time. Hence drivers will be able to identify if there is an available parking slot through the app. It can be adopted in most urban parking spaces and managed by a programmable logic controller (PLC). However, it states that there will be many challenges such as high upfront costs, enforcement and inconvenience for tourists. Still, the benefits such as improved traffic and reduced management cost are worth the challenge. Despite challenges such as connection issue, smart parking system is necessary in order to reduce traffic jam and results in a better user experience as it allows driver to find the nearest available parking slot as soon as possible.
Firstly, automobile was invented to
increase convenience in everyday life. However, with the number of vehicles on
the road is causing undesirable problems such as traffic jams. Shoup (2006)
mentioned that wandering of cars in order to find parking spots is responsible
for 30% of the entire traffic in a city. With this issue arising, smart parking
was being introduced, parking lots have installed guidance system by notifying
drivers the availability of parking spots. According to a research (Shin &
Jun,2014), it shows that with the implementations of smart parking system it
has improved the city traffic situation by 10%. Based on this result, the smart
parking system is proved to be useful in the real-time environment as it
improves the traffic congestion in the city.
Secondly, the traditional method of
finding an available parking slot is to drive around until the user discover an
empty parking slot. User tend to waste a lot of time and it is very
inefficient. There is a chance that after a few rounds of search, user is still
unable to find an empty parking slot. According to Gautam (2019), live
updates on the mobile, easy navigation towards the entrance and exit points and
quick payments through smart parking app can “improve the overall efficiency of
the parking process.” So instead of driving to the destination to find an empty
parking slot, user can now reserve a parking slot through the mobile app. This
allows the user to save the time and have a better parking process.
Lastly, internet connection plays a
crucial role for smart parking to work. Smart parking system may not be as
beneficial to certain country that has poor internet connection. According to
Huawei (2019), isolated parking space has difficulty to transmit the required
data due to connectivity issue. This means that parking location such as
underground parking that has poor internet connection would have difficulty in
utilizing smart parking system.
In conclusion, the use of smart
parking system is beneficial in terms of efficiency and will reduce traffic jam
despite the connectivity issue. However, location that has strong internet
connection shall not be affected by the connectivity issue, thus benefitted
from it.
